Meet the Ladies From Eso Studio and See Their Stunning New Collection!

1st Nov 2022

Meet Jamie, Hannah, and Ann, the ladies from Eso Studio. They met at work as carpet designers and started a side-project with natural dyeing to challenge themselves creatively. Combining their years of professional experience in surface and textile design, they started thinking big... like whole wall BIG. They started by scanning naturally dyed textiles to create patterns for digitally printed wallpaper. "We wanted to capture the natural essence of handmade one-of-a-kind patterns." Eso Studio has now launched their second collection, and we spoke to them about their new collection and their process.

We love the new Echo Collection!  It's texture and simplicity is stunning. Tell us more...

The Echo Collection is an ode to Shibori, an ancient Japanese Technique of creating hand dyed patterns.  This collection was designed intentionally to coordinate with unlimited palettes, textures, and patterns.  Whether it's playing up the grids and stripes for a classic style or embracing the organic nuances for a more relaxed vibe, Echo Collection, is an enduring selection of patterns for limitless projects!

Are there artists that have inspired your work?

We are attracted to artists that have an essence of minimalism but also use repetition and surface. Perhaps it is the process that attracts us. Artists such as Agnes Martin and her poetic and delicate grids or Maya Lin and her use of non-traditional materials to translate natural phenomena. And also textile artists such as Anni Albers or Anne Wilson and the way they push the boundaries of their materials.

What made you want to design wallpaper? What are your preferred materials?

We knew we wanted to use manufacturers within the US. and found a local printer who introduced us to a beautiful matte paper surface which enhanced the nuances of the natural dye inspiring our patterns. Having fine art, installation, and textile background we truly wanted to capture the idea of creating an atmospheric space.

Tell us about your creative process and the techniques you use to create your ethereal designs.

Our work begins with a lot of experimenting. We play with dye materials and fabric and like to combine various parts and pieces often using what happens with non-traditional materials as a point of departure. We look to nature on many levels for concept be it in movement, the microscopic, or structures. We try to be very thoughtful about what we are seeing in interiors and want to push boundaries of how our wallpaper can be used to transform and create an essence of atmospheric space.

Tell us about your commitment to the environment and how that plays out at Eso Studio.

Our process begins with repurposing natural materials. On one side it is because we feel it is less wasteful, but on the other we are conceptually drawn to what is left behind or left over in a poetic sense. All of our papers are FSC certified and PVC free. We make our designs timeless so that they can accommodate many styles. We embrace the thought that you can change your patterns and color schemes and the wallpaper will coordinate regardless.

What else would you like people to know about Eso Studio?

We like to believe that wallpaper is only the beginning for us. Having an interest in interior spaces and how we can push the boundaries of materials we are also exploring woven fabrics and carpet. Be on the lookout!!

Hannah, Ann, and Jamie, thank you for taking the time to chat wallpaper with me.  Your new collection is stunning, and we know will be inspiring a lot of spaces in the future.  We can't wait to see what else you have in store.
